Linux Beginner Guides

A work-in-progress SvelteKit App which can be used as a guide to get started into using a Linux based operating system.

The name I would still consider negotiable as I didn't have a better idea yet.

Motivation

I have started using Linux at the end of 2022, I did my research and wanted to use it as my daily driver as fast as possible. Therefore I started watching different Linux related Youtube channels, I dug around different Subreddits and much more. My final result, installing EndeavourOS and replacing the few programs that do not support Linux with OSS alternatives.

I spent way too much time trying to find "the perfect setup" for me just to realize that it was not "just working" as it is a mostly bare bones Arch Linux installation. Do not get me wrong, it is anything but a bad operating system, but it was just nothing for me as my only Linux experience was mostly Ubuntu Server. Other missing information were problems with unsupported Anti-Cheats, the missing secure-boot signatures, the AUR and much more.

It did not take long for the installation to get a none functioning boot because of a bad Grub update followed by other problems.

This would not have been happened if there was a single point of information to get started somewhere. This is what this website will be about, get new people to use, learn and enjoy Linux.

TODO list

  • "Distrochooser"
    • Make an suggestion what one could use as a distribution dependent on knowledge about Linux, taste of desktop environment, use case of the operating system etc.
  • List of Technical Terms
    • Having a list of terms not everyone knows like DE, WM, Proton, Free/Non-Free, etc. to understand other more technical people
  • Presentation of DEs/WMs
    • Show in a video or VM what one is getting OOB when installing a specific distribution or installing something new
  • Installation guide of the distros
    • Getting through the installation of a distribution from beginning to end, including hardware specific caveats
  • List of (in)compatible devices
    • Missing drivers for capture cards, missing software for keyboard and mouse, alternatives etc.
  • more ideas still to come
